PAU-Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Hoshiarpur organizes

Hoshiarpur/Daljeet Ajnoha/Nov.12 :  Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana has been advocating non-burning of paddy residue and popularization of paddy straw management techniques for avoiding environmental degradation for the benefit of the people in campaign mode. To make the farmers aware about the different paddy residue management technologies, the district level extension agency of Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Bahowal, Hoshiarpur organized a district level awareness camp on paddy residue management on 11-11-2025 at its campus.
On this occasion, Hon’ble Member of Legislative Assembly, Chabbewal, Hoshiarpur, Dr. Ishank Kumar, graced the occasion as chief guest while Director, ICAR-ATARI, Ludhiana, Dr. Parvender Sheoran and Chief Agriculture Officer, Hoshiarpur, Depinder Singh attended the camp as special guests.
Associate Director (Training), PAU-KVK Hoshiarpur, Dr. Maninder Singh Bons, welcomed the guests and the farmers and discussed various activities being conducted by KVK for the welfare of the farming community. He informed that as in previous years, this year also KVK Hoshiarpur has been organizing a campaign for managing paddy residue through awareness camps, trainings, demonstrations and mobilization of school & college students. Dr. Bons also emphasized on the need for full use of machinery on cooperative basis for its optimum utilization.
In his presidential address, Hon’ble Member of Legislative Assembly, Chabbewal, Hoshiarpur, Dr. Ishank Kumar, underscored the commitment of Government for the welfare of the farming community and underlined different activities of the State Govt. regarding the same. Dr. Ishank said that farmers are the backbone of the economy of Punjab and informed that Govt. of Punjab is undertaking all important steps for agricultural development in the state. He also stressed on the need for farmers to follow the recommendations of Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana and especially for adopting resource conservation technologies. Dr. Ishank complimented the work being done by KVK Hoshiarpur and exhorted all to avail the various farmer welfare services and training facilities of KVK.
Director, ICAR-ATARI, Ludhiana, Dr. Parvender Sheoran said that management of paddy residue is the need of the hour. He also highlighted harmful effects of burning of paddy residue burning. He told the farmers to adopt in-situ and ex-situ methods of paddy residue management as per area and field conditions. Dr. Sheoran also gave a clarion call to the farmers to work in campaign mode for achieving this noble cause of non-burning of crop residue.
Chief Agriculture Officer, Hoshiarpur, Depinder Singh praised the efforts by farmers of the district in taking lead in this campaign of paddy residue management due to which the paddy residue burning events have declined from 29 to 15 events in this season. He also shared different departmental schemes, especially on crop residue management.
On this occasion, various technical lectures were organized for the benefit of the farmers. Associate Professor (Animal Science), Dr. Parminder Singh addressed the farmers regarding use of paddy straw for fodder purposes, in mushroom cultivation, paddy straw based biogas plant, for bio char & as mulch and seasonal management of dairy animals, Associate Professor (Agronomy), Sh. Gurpratap Singh shared important tips regarding improved cultivation practices for wheat crop, Assistant Professor (Agricultural Engineering), Dr. Ajaib Singh discussed about different paddy residue management technologies and gave detailed information about the problems faced and their solution, while working with paddy residue management machinery, Assistant Professor (Plant Protection), Dr. Prabhjot Kaur shed light on integrated pest management practices in rabi crops, Assistant Professor (Vegetable Science), Dr. Karmvir Singh Garcha spoke on integrated nutrition gardening & mushroom cultivation and Assistant Professor (Home Science), Dr. Sukhdeep Kaur discussed regarding the importance of nutritive diet.
Progressive farmers undertaking paddy residue management over the years shared their experiences with other farmers and motivated them. They were also honoured by the guests for their important contributions in this noble cause of non-burning of paddy residue over the years.
Seeds of rabi crops-wheat, gobhi sarson, wheat biofertilizers, mineral mixture, uromin licks and PAU technical literature were made available for the benefit of the farmers.
In the end, Sarpanch, village Bahowal, Hardip Singh thanked the guests for gracing the occasion, all experts for delivering informative lectures and farmers & farmwomen for listening attentively to the proceedings of the camp.
