Hoshiarpur /Daljeet Ajnoha/June 03 :
In observance of World Environment Day, the district administration, Red Cross Society and Beyond the “I” Trust Foundation jointly conducted a district-level e‑waste collection campaign that gathered nearly 1,500 kilograms of electronic waste, which has now been sent to an authorized recycler for scientific recycling.
At the ceremony, Deputy Commissioner Ashika Jain praised Beyond the “I” Trust Foundation and the district Red Cross Society for their commendable ‘Chadda Suraj’ campaign focused on e‑waste management. She said that within just 15 days, with the cooperation of schools, NGOs and aware citizens, around one-and-a-half tonnes of e‑waste were collected and dispatched for proper recycling.
Jain added that the initiative will not only promote better and more scientific e‑waste handling, but also raise awareness among children and residents about safe disposal of electronic items. She noted the economic value of e‑waste and urged that when routed to authorized recyclers, recovered materials can be reused to strengthen the economy.
Ashika Jain emphasized that the campaign is not a one‑time effort and will continue regularly in the future. She congratulated schools, social organizations, NGOs and concerned citizens for their participation and appealed to the public to adopt household solid-waste management practices and use separate dustbins for different kinds of waste.
She specially lauded the efforts of Beyond the “I” Trust Foundation and praised the role played by district Red Cross Society secretary Mangesh Sood and joint secretary Aditya Rana in making the campaign successful.
A special ceremony at the residence of Beyond the “I” Trust Foundation founder Manveer Singh celebrated the campaign’s success and honoured contributing institutions and individuals.
The campaign aimed to sensitize students and the public to the safe and scientific disposal of electronic waste. Students were encouraged to deposit obsolete or damaged electronic items from their homes at their schools. The Red Cross Society subsequently collected this e‑waste and sent it to an authorized recycling centre in Ludhiana.
Representatives and principals from 18 schools in the district, as well as members of various social organisations, attended the event. A total of 31 private schools in the district actively participated in the drive.
Voluntary contributors who demonstrated awareness by depositing their e‑waste were also felicitated, including Dr. Sandeep Singh, director of Gursimran Hospital; paediatrician Dr. D.V. Salwan; and social worker Nazam Riyad.
Six schools that made outstanding contributions to the e‑waste collection campaign were honoured with gift hampers and appreciation certificates: Vidya Mandir School (Hoshiarpur), Academic Heights Public School, Chaudhary Balbir Singh School, DAV Model School (Patti), Guru Harikrishna Public School and Pandori Khajoor School.
In addition, all participating schools — including Saty Sai Vidya Niketan and Toddlers’ Home School, Hoshiarpur — received certificates of appreciation for their enthusiastic involvement.
The event was also attended by Beyond the “I” Trust Foundation founder Manveer Singh, chartered accountant Nancy Singh, Mastermind Institute head and founder of Sanskari Students NGO Mani Gogia, among others.
