According to information received from Mahilpur Police Station, a young man ended his life by consuming a poisonous substance after his fiancée, whom he had spent around ₹26–27 lakhs to send to Canada, did not call him abroad as promised.
As per the details provided by SHO Gagandeep Singh Sekhon, Kulwinder Singh, son of Gurdev Singh, a resident of Saila Kalan, lodged a complaint stating that his elder son, Karanvir Singh, aged around 24, was engaged on May 15, 2022, to Navjot Kaur, daughter of Balwinder Singh, resident of Burj Araiya, Police Station Qila Lal Singh, District Batala. The entire engagement ceremony was arranged by Lakhwinder Singh and his wife Baby, residents of Juhra, Police Station Bhogpur, District Jalandhar Rural, who acted as mediators. The complainant said he bore the entire engagement expense of approximately ₹50,000.
He further mentioned that Navjot Kaur had completed IELTS with 6.5 bands, and there was a verbal agreement that she would go to Canada and eventually sponsor Karanvir Singh to join her there. However, after spending ₹26–27 lakhs to send Navjot Kaur to Canada, not only was his son never called abroad, but the money was also not returned.
This situation caused his son to become depressed. He began living in a hostel and, on the night of June 19–20, consumed a poisonous substance, ending his life.
Based on the complaint, the police have registered a case against: Navjot Kaur (daughter of Balwinder Singh), Pabjot Singh (son of Balwinder Singh), Balwinder Singh (son of Gyan Singh), Rajwinder Kaur (wife of Balwinder Singh), all residents of Burj Araiya, Police Station Qila Lal Singh, District Batala,
