Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana has been advocating non-burning of paddy residue and popularization of paddy straw management techniques for avoiding environmental degradation for the benefit of the people in campaign mode. To make the farmers aware about the different paddy residue management technologies, PAU-Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Bahowal, Hoshiarpur organized a district level awareness camp on paddy residue management on 11-8-2026 at its campus in which Dr Dapinder Singh, Chief Agriculture Officer, Department of Agriculture and Farmer’s Welfare, Hoshiarpur participated as chief guest.
Dr. Maninder Singh Bons, Associate Director (Training), KVK Hoshiarpur welcomed the guests and the farmers and discussed various activities being conducted by KVK for the welfare of the farming community. He also informed that as in previous years, this year also KVK Hoshiarpur has initiated the campaign for managing paddy residue through awareness camps, trainings, demonstrations, mobilization of school and college students, hoardings and literature distribution. He said that every technique cannot be applicable in all fields so he stressed the importance of using appropriate farm machinery for paddy residue management based on field conditions, crop to be sown, machinery availability and the time available for residue management. Dr. Bons also exhorted the farmers and farmwomen to avail the services of training programmes at KVK to adopt the subsidiary occupations and come forward for processing & value addition of farm produce for augmenting their income.
In his presidential address, Dr Dapinder Singh, Chief Agriculture Officer said that management of paddy residue is the need of the hour. He stressed upon the farmers to incorporate the paddy residue into the soil, which would improve the soil health and was ecofriendly technology. Dr. Sandhu also praised the efforts by various farmers of the district in taking lead in this campaign of paddy residue management which led to decrease in paddy residue burning spots from 29 to 18 in the last year. He also gave a clarion call to the framers to follow up this lead in carrying out this noble cause of non-burning of crop residue this year too in campaign mode.
On this occasion, various technical lectures were organized for the benefit of the farmers. Dr. Parminder Singh, Associate Professor (Animal Science), KVK Hoshiarpur discussed about the different nutrients available in paddy residue and need for their preservation and use of paddy straw in biogas plants and as fodder. He also shared technical information on poultry farming as a successful venture. Dr. Ajaib Singh, Assistant Professor (Agricultural Engineering) sensitized the farmers about the various paddy residue management technologies for the effective management of paddy residue. He also gave detailed information on use of mould board plough and mulcher machines for managing paddy residue for timely sowing of potato and peas, major early sown vegetables of the area after the harvesting of popular short duration variety of paddy, PR 126.
Dr. Gurinder Singh, Agriculture Officer and Dr. Harpreet Singh, Agriculture Development Officer, Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Block Mahilpur informed the farmers about various departmental schemes available for the benefit of the farming community and urged farmers to use paddy residue management machinery on custom hiring basis for its optimum utilization.
Progressive farmers undertaking paddy residue management over the years shared their experiences with other farmers and motivated them. Sh. Paramjit Singh from village Ladhewal, Sh. Hardeep Singh from village Dhakkon, Sh. Inderjit Singh from village Nasran and S. Avtar Singh from village Burobari were honoured for adopting in-situ paddy residue management technologies in their fields.
The participants were also given an overview of the paddy residue management machinery at KVK farm and their queries were answered on the spot.
