Punjab’s Fiscal Health at Stake: Policies, Not Employees, Blamed for Decline
Hoshiarpur/Daljeet Ajnoha/Jan.26 : Renowned educationist and journalist Sanjiv Kumar has voiced deep concern over Punjab’s last-place ranking—18th among 18 states—in NITI Aayog’s Fiscal Health Index. According to him, the state’s poor performance is a direct result of ineffective government policies, not the efforts of its employees.
Sanjiv Kumar pointed out that while Punjab government employees are dedicated and efficient, they have been awaiting arrears and revised pay scales since 2016. “The Central Government has already constituted the 8th Pay Commission, but Punjab employees are still struggling to receive salaries that match national standards,” he added.
This worrying situation reflects the broader fiscal challenges faced by Punjab, which is grappling with low revenue mobilization, poor debt sustainability, and limited investment in quality expenditure. Kumar’s remarks underline the urgent need for reforms to lift Punjab out of its fiscal crisis and ensure a brighter future for its workforce.
