Hoshiarpur Daljeet Ajnoha/Oct.13– The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), under the leadership of Punjab president and former Rajya Sabha member Dr. Avtar Singh Karimpuri, staged statewide protests demanding an impartial investigation into the alleged caste-based harassment that led to the suicide of Haryana Police ADGP-rank officer, IPS Puran Kumar. The protests culminated in the submission of a memorandum to the President of India through the Deputy Commissioner.Gathering in large numbers outside the Hoshiarpur Mini Secretariat, BSP workers raised slogans against senior officials accused of discriminatory and prejudiced conduct. Addressing the gathering, Dr. Karimpuri said that incidents of caste-based hatred and exploitation insult the Constitution of India, even eight decades after independence. He termed it shameful that an officer who had reached one of the highest positions in the police force was driven to suicide due to casteist oppression.Referring to the October 7 tragedy, Karimpuri pointed out that despite the passage of a week, neither any action had been taken nor had the post-mortem been conducted, as the family insisted on justice and action against the accused. He condemned the continuing prevalence of casteist attitudes, drawing parallels with earlier incidents such as the throwing of a shoe at the Chief Justice of India.Karimpuri criticised both the central and Haryana governments for failing to address the matter with sensitivity and seriousness, and demanded that the culprits be swiftly arrested and subjected to strict legal action. He also expressed disappointment over the Congress leadership’s silence, calling it deplorable and worrying.Highlighting the vulnerability of marginalised communities, Karimpuri said that if high-ranking officers are not safe from caste discrimination, ordinary citizens are even more at risk. He urged the Bahujan community to strengthen its organisation under the “Break caste, unite society” banner given by late Kanshi Ram, and to rally under BSP supremo Mayawati’s leadership to form governments for safeguarding their rights.Prominent BSP leaders present included Gurnam Chaudhary, BSP Punjab coordinator; Bhagwan Das Sidhu, Punjab general secretary; Maninder Sherpuri, Punjab secretary; Sukhdev Bitta, Punjab secretary; Daljit Rai, district president; Advocate Dharminder Dadra, district general secretary; Som Nath Bains, vice district president; Advocate Palwinder Mana, Chabbewal constituency in-charge; Yash Bhatti, Chabbewal president; Madan Singh Bains, Hoshiarpur in-charge; Surjit Mahinmi, Hoshiarpur president; as well as Dinesh Pappu and hundreds of party workers.
