Punjab Cabinet Minister Dr. Ravjot Singh today addressed a press conference and alleged that the Central BJP Government has once again targeted Punjab, this time by cutting the ration cards of nearly 8 lakh families — affecting almost 32 lakh beneficiaries across the state. He termed the decision a well-planned conspiracy against the poor of Punjab.
Speaking in the presence of Punjab Vidhan Sabha Deputy Speaker Jai Krishan Singh Rouri, MLAs Bram Shanker Jimpa and Karamvir Singh Ghumman, Dr. Ravjot Singh said that since coming to power in 2022 with a huge mandate, the Aam Aadmi Party government under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has continuously worked for the welfare of farmers, labourers, the poor, and common people. In contrast, the BJP-led Central Government has repeatedly discriminated against Punjab, whether on farmers’ issues or other matters.
The Cabinet Minister reminded that although Punjab constitutes only 1.5% of India’s geographical area, Punjabis have always stood tall during crises — be it at the borders or in ensuring the nation’s food security. Punjab contributes 40% of the country’s wheat and 26% of the rice production, yet the Centre continues to adopt discriminatory policies. He said the decision to cut ration cards is nothing less than a direct assault on the rights of the poor and needy.
Dr. Ravjot Singh further revealed that in Majha region, nearly 7 lakh beneficiaries have been affected, in Doaba region around 5.5 lakh, and in Malwa region, close to 20 lakh ration cards are being cut. Specifically, in Hoshiarpur district, more than 1.38 lakh poor beneficiaries are suffering due to this move.
He strongly asserted that under the leadership of CM Bhagwant Singh Mann, the Punjab Government will fight tooth and nail against this conspiracy and will not allow any injustice to the common people. “The BJP’s anti-poor face has been exposed,” he said, adding that such steps are not only inhuman but also a direct attack on the livelihood of the poor.
The Minister also pointed out that earlier the BJP government resorted to anti-people tactics such as cutting votes and imposing laws like SIR, and now it is attempting to snatch away ration from the plates of poor families.
On this occasion, several dignitaries including Backfinco Punjab Chairman Sandeep Saini, District Planning Committee Chairperson Karamjeet Kaur, Mayor Surinder Kumar, Municipal Improvement Trust Chairman Gurvinder Singh Pabla, Market Committee Hoshiarpur Chairman Jaspal Singh Chechi, Market Committee Dasuya Chairman K.P. Sandhu, Harmeet Singh Aulakh, Satwant Singh Sian, Atbar Singh, Amit Nagi, Kanchan Deol, Manjot Kaur, Dripan Saini, Sachin Kumar and Manpreet Raki were also present.
