Strong opposition to 8,500 cusecs water allotment to Haryana; Calls for political unity in Punjab
Hoshiarpur/May 1 /Daljeet Ajnoha : Lok Sabha MP Dr. Raj Kumar Chabbewal has termed the Bhakra Beas Management Board’s (BBMB) decision to release 8,500 cusecs of additional water from Bhakra Dam to Haryana—despite strong objections from the Punjab government—as a betrayal of Punjab and a deep-rooted conspiracy against Punjabis. He alleged that the move is a direct attack on Punjab’s rights by the BJP-led central government.
Dr. Chabbewal pointed out that the water levels in both Bhakra and Pong dams are already critically low. In such a situation, supplying additional water to Haryana is not only unjustified but also illegal. He said this decision will further aggravate the already severe drinking water crisis in Punjab.
He further stated that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has already clarified that Punjab does not even have enough water to meet its own needs, and Haryana—having already taken more than its fair share—cannot be allowed more.
Dr. Chabbewal urged all political parties, including the BJP, to rise above partisan interests and unite to protect Punjab’s rights. He emphasized that this is not just a political issue but a matter of the state’s survival and dignity.
He concluded by stating that the Punjab government will continue to fight for its rightful share of water at all levels.
