Hoshiarpur/Daljeet Ajnoha/May 10 : Professor Dr. Amrik Singh, son of Mata Surjit Kaur and the late Sardar Joginder Singh Kanungo, has brought pride to his parents’ name on international soil. He earned the title of Best Official for India at the World Kabaddi Tournament held in Malaysia. His success is greatly attributed to the unwavering support of his wife, Mrs. Ravinder Kaur. From the day she entered his life, Dr. Amrik Singh has continued to progress and rise in his career.
He has two sons: Parneet Singh (Deputy Manager at Punjab National Bank) and Prithish Veer Singh (resident of Canada). Dr. Amrik Singh credits his inspiration in Kabaddi to the late Kabaddi coach Sarwan Singh Ball, a recipient of the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Award.
During his school days, he was selected for the Sports Wing in Kapurthala, securing second place in Punjab School Games and first in the Punjab State Championship. In higher education, he achieved first position in his university and second place in the All India Inter-University Kabaddi Competitions. As captain of the Punjab team, he participated in three Junior National Games held in Nasik (Maharashtra), Hyderabad, and Andhra Pradesh. He also participated in weightlifting and earned titles in bodybuilding such as Mr. Punjab and Mr. Punjabi University Patiala.
After completing his MPED and NIS Diploma, he began his career in 1988 as a Physical Education Lecturer. During his tenure as Assistant Professor, he served as NCC Captain, Youth Coordinator for Youth Services Department (Punjab, Haryana, Himachal, and Chandigarh), led the team in New Delhi, and was appointed to the Sports Committee of Guru Nanak Dev University.
He served as a referee in the World Kabaddi Cup organized by the Punjab Government for four consecutive years and worked as a Technical Official in the India Police Games four times. For four years, he has served as Chief Technical Official in both European and British Kabaddi Tournaments. He has performed duties in New Zealand, Malaysia, Peru (South America), Glasgow (UK), Italy, and Birmingham (UK).
At the World Kabaddi Cup held from March 17 to 23, 2025, he was the Chief Coach of both the boys’ and girls’ teams from England, who secured second place in the tournament.
State Award winner Roshan Lal Sharma, a national-level athlete and international official, stated that Professor Dr. Amrik Singh is not only an expert in sports but also in his academic field. The university has appointed him as a member for academic courses for two years. He has served as Registrar and Vice Principal at his college and has earned a Ph.D. degree.
Mr. Roshan Lal further added that Dr. Amrik Singh is a man of simple nature, leads a modest life, and possesses deep spiritual knowledge. Many athletes are inspired by his personality. His elder brother, Sardar Maan Singh, is a national-level athlete; Colonel Jarnail Singh has served as Deputy Director, Sainik Welfare, Punjab; and Ranjit Singh is currently serving as a Physical Education Teacher at Guru Nanak College, Kapurthala.
Before leaving for any international assignment, Dr. Amrik Singh always seeks blessings from his mother and, upon success, always thanks God.
