Hoshiarpur/ May 24/Daljeet Ajnoha : With the Nagar Council elections scheduled for May 26, Deputy Commissioner-cum-District Election Officer Ashika Jain has invoked powers under Section 163 of the Indian Civil Rights Assistance to issue restrictions on gatherings in the election-bound areas of the district. Under the orders, no more than five persons will be permitted to assemble at any place where poll-related activity is in force.
The orders come into immediate effect from 4 pm on May 24 (Sunday) when election campaigning is to be closed, and will remain in force until completion of the electoral process on May 26, 2026. During this 48-hour period, door-to-door campaigning will be permitted only in groups of up to four persons. Political leaders, party workers or office-bearers who do not have voting rights in a particular constituency must leave the restricted area from 4 pm on May 24.
In line with directions from the Punjab Excise Department, May 26, 2026, will be observed as a ‘dry day’ in constituencies where voting is taking place. The Punjab Labour Department has also ordered that registered shop employees and workers at other establishments who are voters in the Nagar Council polls will be granted leave on May 26 so that they can exercise their franchise.
