Dr. Bhupendra Vastushastri: House shape

International Vastu scholar and author Dr. Bhupendra Vastushastri says the shape of a plot and building plays a decisive role in residents’ wellbeing, and that traditional texts accord special importance to correct geometry. According to Dr. Vastushastri, plots or houses with irregular, unsightly forms — such as truncated or extended corners, triangular, pentagonal, hexagonal, octagonal or other irregular multi-sided shapes — are considered inauspicious.
He said a rectangular or square (prismatic) plot and house are classified as auspicious. Even on a rectangular plot, if the building spreads its wings appropriately and the internal layout follows Vastu principles, the house can be as grand as a palace. Residents of such homes are likely to enjoy wealth, physical comfort, mental peace and success. If the extended wings of a building are used for business, there is a significantly higher chance of prosperity and the arrival of Lakshmi (wealth goddess).
Dr. Vastushastri added that within the same building, occupants of an extended wing (bhujā-pasār) tend to fare better, while those in an inward-protruding section (peṭ-pasār) often face failure. If a plot combines peṭ-pasār with a sun-penetrating (sūrya-bhedī) or moon-penetrating (candra-bhedī) form, its residents may repeatedly encounter setbacks.
He warned that peṭ-pasār and bhujā-pasār forms paired with triangular, pentagonal, hexagonal or otherwise malformed shapes — or with any corner that is shortened or extended — yield harmful results. In Vastu, only an enlarged Ishan (northeast) corner is considered auspicious. If the Ishan corner is cut or deficient in any building form, the owner may continually face problems related to wealth, education, children and illness. Conversely, if the Ishan is enlarged, clean, light and sloping, the house guarantees a bright future and robust health for its inhabitants, he asserted.
Dr. Vastushastri’s comments draw on classical Vastu literature that places strong emphasis on correct plot geometry and internal layout as foundational to household prosperity and wellbeing.
