Hoshiarpur /Daljeet Ajnoha/On his birthday, Colonel Gurmeet Singh donated Rs 5 lakh to J.S.S. Asha Kiran Special School in Jahankhelan to support the welfare of children with special needs. Colonel Singh serves as secretary of the AshaDeep Welfare Society and, along with several of his former army colleagues who remain inspired by him, has been closely associated with the school and its ongoing work for children with special needs.
Principal Shaily Sharma said that Colonel Singh’s wife, Mrs. Madhumeet Kaur, has also been actively involved in helping special-needs children. Madhumeet Kaur is a member of the Donation for Good Causes organization and provides free lectures as a teacher-trainer at the J.S.S. Asha Kiran Teacher Training Institute. The couple are parents of a special-needs child and, in memory of their child, have instituted the “Jasmeet Award of Excellence” on Teacher’s Day, under which Asha Kiran school staff receive awards and cash prizes.
The AshaDeep Welfare Society office-bearers — Harbans Singh, Ram Asra and Paramjit Singh Sachdeva — and Principal Shaily Sharma thanked Colonel Gurmeet Singh for his support. Speaking on the occasion, Colonel Singh said the decision to relocate from Patiala to Hoshiarpur was motivated by the work being done by the AshaDeep Welfare Society and the school. “Our sole purpose now is to serve children with special needs,” he said.
