Student Protest at Jantar Mantar Highlights Growing Demand for Systemic Reforms

Chandigarh/Daljeet Ajnoha/ July 29 :
The ongoing student agitation at Jantar Mantar has brought renewed national attention to the recurring issue of examination paper leaks and the broader challenges facing India’s education system. Thousands of students have voiced frustration over repeated cancellations of recruitment examinations, alleging that paper leaks have shattered the aspirations of millions of deserving candidates.
The protest, led by various student organisations, has evolved beyond a demand for action against paper leaks. Demonstrators are calling for comprehensive reforms to ensure transparency, accountability and fairness in competitive examinations conducted by both Central and State recruitment agencies.
According to legal expert Ajay Jain, recurring paper leaks represent more than administrative failures—they erode public trust and inflict severe financial, emotional and psychological hardship on students and their families. He notes that candidates, particularly those from rural areas, often relocate to coaching hubs such as Delhi, Kota and Hyderabad, where families bear heavy expenses on coaching fees, accommodation and daily living costs.
The article also highlights the difficult living conditions in coaching centres like Mukherjee Nagar and Rajendra Nagar, where overcrowding and inadequate infrastructure have repeatedly raised safety concerns. Tragic incidents, including flooding, fire accidents and increasing reports of student depression and suicides, underscore the immense pressure faced by aspirants.
While recent public protests resulted in political accountability, including the resignation of the concerned Union Education Minister, Jain argues that replacing individuals alone cannot resolve the crisis. He stresses that the problem is structural and requires long-term institutional reforms.
The article points out that India already possesses advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, encryption and blockchain that could significantly strengthen examination security. However, effective implementation, political commitment and administrative accountability remain the key challenges.
Jain also raises concerns over the increasing commercialisation of education, observing that rising school fees, expensive coaching institutes and the rapid expansion of private educational institutions have made quality education increasingly unaffordable for many middle-class and lower-income families. He argues that the dominance of the coaching industry has weakened the role of mainstream schools and widened educational inequalities.
Calling the Jantar Mantar agitation a “wake-up call,” the article urges governments to undertake comprehensive education reforms, strengthen public education, improve regulation of private institutions, adopt secure examination technologies and ensure that merit remains the foundation of admissions and public recruitment.
Concluding his analysis, Ajay Jain states that education should be treated not as a commercial commodity but as a public trust and a nation-building mission. He emphasises that unless deep structural reforms are implemented, recurring paper leaks and temporary political responses will continue to undermine the confidence of millions of young Indians.
